What are igfxtray.exe, hkcmd.exe & igfxpers.exe?
Before we dive into what the files actually do, it’s important to understand where they’re located. All of the files in question are located in the System32 folder of the Windows operating system.
If you didn’t already know, the System32 folder can be found in C:\Windows\System32. If you have your operating system installed on a different drive or partition, the drive letter may be different.
IGFXTray
The first file in question is the igfxtray.exe file. When launched, the program launches into a process called “Intel Graphics Accelerator Helper.” It is made by the Intel Corporation and usually accompanies graphics chipsets within computers. If you have the Intel 810 graphics chipset, this application will allow you to configure and diagnose issues related to the chipset. While the program may be located within the System32 folder, it is not an essential Windows process and can be deleted at any time. The purpose of the program is just to give ease of use of the program from the system tray.
HKCMDNext, we have a process that goes by the name of “Intel Hotkey.” It too is produced by the Intel Corporation and is not an essential Windows process. Although the process is technically not necessary to use the operating system properly, it is not recommended that you delete the file unless you begin to experience problems with hkcmd.exe in particular. Whenever a multimedia device is installed that’s manufactured by Intel, this software is installed alongside it. It allows you to configure hotkeys and diagnose problems with different multimedia devices.
IGXPers
If it wasn’t apparent from the name, IGXPers.exe is a process that provides additional configuration options for these devices. When launched, the process is called “Intel Common User Interface Module.” Designed in conjunction with the NVidia Corporation, this particular program allows users to customize their NVidia graphics cards to a certain extent.
Useful or useless?
A question that usually comes up in regards to these particular programs is if they’re useful or not. While all of the programs are located within the System32 folder, they may not be absolutely necessary to the proper operation of your operating system. However, each of the following programs may provide benefits “behind the scenes” that you’re not yet aware of. Things like controlling the fan speed on your graphics card can be important when trying to keep your computer quiet, but until you delete the program responsible for controlling the fan speed, you may not realize that the process is always hard at work in the background.
Tampering with or deleting these files in an improper way can potentially damage processes and the reinstallation of them could prove more challenging that simply remedying the problem.
